"Jane Eyre, Uncovered" is a fictional exhibition at Form/Design Center that explores 140 years of book cover design. First published in 1847, Jane Eyre is a story about integrity, passion and independence. It's been read as romance, gothic thriller and feminist classic; and its covers reveal as much about their time as about the story itself.
The design project focuses on how a visual identity can be created that complements the museum's existing profile and is also adaptable and unique. It utilizes existing formats like posters and adds new ones, catalogue and merchandise, to engage visitors in varied ways. The visual identity highlights the designs of the book covers and their differences. It invites viewers to reflect on and look closely at these covers: How is Jane shown? When is she visible? What typefaces or colors repeat across decades? Even if it doesn't make you want to read the book, then perhaps it can at least make you rethink the cover of the next one you pick up.
