In this project, I have remade the Social Democrats 2022 election posters, inspired by their poster designs from 1906 to 1960. The aim is to revive a poster tradition that unfortunately has been lost over time. The posters are printed using a risograph, which is a rather unpredictable but exiting technique. Each print turns out unique and the imperfections adds a personal, handmade quality.
I have used elements from historical Social Democratic posters such as the red flag, the use of photography, illustrations, color and typography, but adapted them to fit a contemporary context. My goal has been to create a bolder, more powerful visual expression, something I find missing in today’s political campaign posters. With a background in political science, I also rephrased the slogans to better reflect the social democratic ideology. Hopefully this project will inspire designers working in political visual communication to explore historical posters as a source of ideas.
